Abstract

Spiritual beliefs have always played a fundamental role in world societies. Therefore, the relationship
between man and the divine was influenced by the environment the primitive peoples lived in. This paper
explores the concepts of the shaman and his drum according to the mindset and spiritual beliefs (feyentun)
of the Mapuche people. This nation is located in the southern part of the world in the present territories of
Argentina and Chile. The figure of the shaman with his drum is invariably essential for spiritual leadership
and cannot exist without each other and constitute an important dichotomy for the Mapuche culture in the
economic, spiritual and social realms. Therefore, this paper will rely on scholarly literature in anthropology,
ethnomusicology, and history that examines the relationship between the shaman and the drum among
the Mapuche people. This review work may be helpful for future comparative studies of the concept of
shamanism of the Mapuche and its basic elements in indigenous communities inhabiting different
geographical regions of the world.
